Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

What you'll be doing

In 2010

You will be building houses for favela (slum) dwellers in the Campo Largo area through the Open Hands for Brazil project. Be prepared to get stuck into some serious shovelling and painting – no specialist building expertise required. So far we have completed 12 new homes. Each one costs around £4,500. With your help – financial and practical – we plan to complete several more in 2010.

Meet the vibrant people

You also visit families living in the favelas - maybe the one that will move into the house you are building. You will also visit a number of outreach projects run by local churches; prepare to meet the elderly and prisoners, but also lots of children from the favelas. Get ready for lots of games, craft activities and new friends.

Breathtaking Brazil

You can make a trip to the breathtaking Iguazu Falls and walk in a protected rainforest. Also, you can visit Itaipu Dam, one of the greatest feats of engineering in the modern world.

Become a voice for the outcast

Brazil is a country of shocking extremes. It is famous for its opulent beaches, and glamorous nightlife and carnival. But just a few miles from the tourist hot spots there is another hidden Brazil. Brazils slums or ‘favelas’ are places of shocking poverty and decay. Many homes built of little more of trash.

Crime and disease are rife – it can be a frightening, hopeless existence. This is a Brazil that few holidaying Westerners ever get to see, and that many wealthier Brazilians choose to ignore completely.
