Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

What you'll be doing

In 2010

We will continue to lend a hand to the work of the Baptist Church in Gotesti - they want to be a beacon of hope at the heart of their community- a community struggling with terrible poverty, alcoholism and hopelessness. You will be participating on vital feeding, welfare and education programmes for some of the poorest families, along with doing some building and repair work.

2010_pic_small_moldovaYour main project will be to refurbish a newly-donated Church building in the town of Chircani. It houses a newly planted church in a community that otherwise has no Christian witness. As well as regular worship, they offer a youth club, Sunday school and outreach for vulnerable children.

You will help to refurbish all six rooms in the building, making them habitable again. This will involve replacing the windows, repointing and rendering the outside walls, re-plastering, installing new electrics, painting and decorating the inner walls and re-equipping the classrooms. This is hard work but fulfilling; it makes an impact on the community. It also allows local Christians to share their faith in a largely atheist region, and for you to share your faith too.

Discover Moldova ancient and modern

During your time off you can see the many different sides of Moldova. You will have a chance to visit the capital Chisnau with its Soviet architecture and impressive war memorials.

Don’t be fooled by Moldova’s location as part of Europe; this is a truly cross-cultural experience!

Giving an atheist nation reasons to believe in God

The legacy of nearly half a century of Soviet communism lives on in Moldova.

Moldova is Europe’s poorest nation and you will see many things that you would usually expect to see in the developing nations of Africa, Asia and South America. Its people are very hospitable, with a wonderful, infectious sense of humour. Unfortunately years of communism have destroyed much of their community spirit – mutual suspicion is still rife, and a “look after number one” ethos prevails.
