Uganda

Clare Truter

The Ugandan people have taught me that happiness is not measured by possessions - it comes from a loving family, a community and making the most of what you have.

Our focus in Uganda continues to be children, young people and education. The youngest generations must not lose their chance of a stable, happy prosperous future because of what Uganda has suffered in the past.

There are many Ugandans ready to care, educate and train a new generation. But they need the resources and infrastructure to do their work properly. You will be helping to provide this, and leaving a generation with a lasting legacy.

Mission Direct currently works on projects in three areas: join us in Rukungiri to help us build school buildings and a training centre for young people desperate for the chance of an education. In Kumi you can help us to build 40 special homes for AIDS and war orphans, giving them a family life that they long for desperately. Or try something a bit more daring: join our Xtreme Team in Kotomor. Live with local families in an Internally Displaced Persons’ camp and build a school for children displaced by the brutal civil war.

Don’t worry – be happy!

"I think I will be more grateful and happier now" - Uganda volunteer

When we ask our volunteers what they have learned from their time in Uganda, they say things like ‘to be happy and enjoy life’. Time and again, volunteers return transformed by the warmth and upbeat natures of Ugandans, in spite of their circumstances.
