Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

Glorious mud

Glorious mud!

Because of their practical nature, you will often come back from a Mission Direct trip with a few extra skills.  Our Uganda volunteers got a crash course in mud hut repair to help a family in urgent need.

A Mission Direct team in Kumi responded to a call for help for some home repair work. “We were told about an entire family with HIV/AIDS who lived in a mud hut” explained team leader Louise Wallis “The roof in particular was badly damaged, and the family didn’t have the strength to rebuild it, or the money to pay the local builders.”

The team called in a builder, but also helped out themselves, learning how to weave reeds into a new roof, and pack mud onto the side of the building.

“We were a complete spectacle for the entire village, struggling, getting very dirty and having the occasional mud fight – they all thought it was hilarious!”

All About Mission Direct

Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.
