Mission Direct is involved with a number of medical projects in and around Rukungiri in the South West of Uganda and Luampa in Zambia. You will join one of these projects on an individually-tailored 7-8 day clinical placement. Throughout your trip you will work both either on your own and as part of a larger team.
You will pass on your training either with hands-on work, or by formal or informal teaching and instruction. Don’t worry, this occurs naturally as you work, and is far less daunting than it sounds! There will also be opportunities to observe a variety of different medically-based projects that are taking place.
We have a number of key projects in the area, affording you a wide range of opportunities for your placement. These include:
Karoli Lwanga Hospital – A general mission hospital covering a wide range of units including medical, surgical, maternity, dental, physiotherapy, HIV/AIDS and laboratory services.
Rugarama Health Centre – A “GP style” health centre providing care with a daily out-patient clinic, maternity unit and medical ward.
Other specialist projects include: Healthcare teaching to local schools and colleges, helping families with disabled children, physiotherapy and occupational therapy work. Tell us what you want to do with your skills and we will work hard to find the best fit possible.
You will be working in a local general hospital, in Kumi in the north east of the country.
This is a team with a mental health focus. The residents have mental health difficulties and/or drug/alcohol dependencies. The aim of the programme is rehabilitative with the aim of reintegration into the community.
Luampa Mission Hospital - This remote hospital serves a population who travel many hours by foot or ox-cart to receive treatment. There is an out-patient clinic, inpatient wards, leprosy and HIV/AIDS clinics, outreach immunisation visits, maternity services and some very basic surgery – all from a building that only has 1 hour of electricity and water per day! Our aim is to offer spiritual as well as physical healing for the patients and staff.
The village boasts a school and church and there is the option for volunteers to offer Community healthcare teaching.
Our aim is to offer spiritual as well as physical healing for the patients and staff.
At the end of our trip we will visit Kafue National Park – the second largest national park in Africa.
You will be joining a community-based programme that offers home-based care to chronically ill patients – many suffering from HIV. This trip would particularly suit those with a social care background.
Each trip will be topped off with a trip out into the wilds of Africa to take in the stunning scenery and wildlife nearby – in the case of Sierra Leone this is the stunning Burah Beach where you will eat freshly caught fish from a barbeque.
Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.
